Autumn Adventures and Thanksgiving Spirit at Santa Gema Galgani

This month, our English Department embraced the colours, traditions, and values of Autumn and Thanksgiving across all stages of our bilingual programme. From our youngest learners to our oldest secondary students, everyone found creative and meaningful ways to celebrate gratitude and the beauty of the season.

Fun with Phonics in Infantil

In Infantil, our language assistants brought phonics to life with a very hungry Thanksgiving turkey who only liked eating /g/ words. Children had a wonderful time identifying, sorting, and “feeding” the turkey words like gobble, gift, gravy, gather, and games. The activity not only reinforced key phonics skills in a playful way but also sparked their curiosity: How many Thanksgiving “g” words can you think of? The classroom was filled with laughter—and lots of enthusiastic gobbling!

Traditions and Creativity in Primary

In Primary, students explored the rich traditions behind Thanksgiving. Language assistants shared stories about typical celebrations in the United States, including the historical origins of the holiday, the important contributions of Native American peoples, and the modern customs that bring families and communities together: the iconic turkey feast, colourful parades, and volunteering to support those in need. One of the highlights was our delightful Turkey Disguise Project, where students transformed their turkeys into superheroes, athletes, princesses, and even famous characters to save them from becoming dinner! To complete the celebration, our Fall and Giving Thanks display filled the hallways with warm seasonal colours and messages of appreciation.

Gratitude in Secondary

In Secondary, our 4º ESO students deepened their understanding of the holiday by learning targeted vocabulary related to Thanksgiving traditions, foods, and expressions of gratitude. They then applied this vocabulary in real context: creating thoughtful projects about what they are thankful for and designing their own Thanksgiving menus, giving the classic celebration a unique Spanish twist by incorporating local seasonal products.

A Season of Warmth

As the month comes to a close, we are reminded of the true spirit of this season: taking time to be thankful, enjoying moments with family and friends, and appreciating the natural beauty that Autumn brings to our surroundings. From golden leaves to cosy classroom activities, this month has been full of warmth, learning, and community. We are grateful for our students’ enthusiasm and creativity—and we look forward to even more bilingual adventures ahead!
